Leila Abdul-Rauf & Nathan Verrill
Amma Ateria
Danishta Rivero
This month we have sound worlds from the underworlds, the over lords and the flatlandz! Starting with one half of Las Sucias aka one half of Voicehandler, and all herself Danishta Rivero! Followed by mysterious Amma Ateria (aka Jeanie Aprille Tang) the plexiglass wielder of IMA fame! Ending it all with Leila Abdul-Rauf accompanied by Nathan Verrill descend us into the darker corners of our dreamy evening.
Danishta Rivero - A musician and sound artist based in San Francisco, Rivero is a vocalist, and also performs on the Hydrophonium, a water-based electro-acoustic percussion instrument she created. She has recently been active touring with her duo Voicehandler, with percussionist Jacob Felix Heule, performing their song cycle. Blood Wedding, her just intonation noise duo with Chuck Johnson, will release its first album, A Survey of Locked Modes, this year. She co-founded Optiphonal Wonder Machine, a multimedia collaboration with Jennifer Rannells. Danishta received a Meet The Composer grant for her participation in the 14th Annual Music for People and Thingamajigs Festival in 2011. ammaateria.com
Amma Ateria aka Jeanie Aprille Tang - Tang is an audio visual artist + electro-acoustic composer/improviser. Born in Hong Kong, she gravitates to rhythms of construction sites, roaming traffic, inaudible conversations, and airplanes. Natural and synthetic worlds are the polar opposites in her sonic practice. Sounds that distort the cognition of natural occurrences, such as the eruption of wind, metal, water, and the sounds of underwater movements, collide with the velocity, frequencies, timbres, pitches, distances, and rhythms of metallic constructions, motors, and speech. Volume, as in amplitude (loudness), versus volume, as in mass (size). A former student of behavioral science, her practice in sound consists of cross-modal synesthetic influences from the contemporary moment, as well as synopsis and identity assignments from geometric perspectives. With field recordings of different environments, the illusion of spaces, unnatural entering, exiting, and transitions are created, with modulations and blending of synthetic timbre and frequencies. Her instrument is a collection of individual acoustic objects and electronic hardware. With an acoustic approach of mental and muscle memories in an electro-acoustic setting, coexistence and interference between natural and synthetic sounds are developed at the moment when acoustic sounds are modulated and overlapped with themselves in unstable manners and movements in time. Her interests are slow wave, new colour, irregular heartbeats, and circuitry. Studied at Mills College with focus in music composition, audio engineering, media technology. leilaabdulrauf.bandcamp.com
Leila Abdul-Rauf and Nathan Verrill - Multi-instrumentalist and composer enters a world all of her own weaving brass, piano and various othertextures into filmic soundscapes that echo the sounds of memories faded through time. Songs are not so much composed as captured from dreams. Time and space are distilled down to the remains of distant memories and hidden emotions, melded into a symphony of ethereal melancholy.
