We share experiences of a built environment colored by personal, political and practical realities that often feel simultaneously antagonistic and comforting.
High Rise is an immersive, painting-based and site responsive installation building upon my previous interest in expanding the two-dimensional space in my art works out into the actual space of the gallery. The composition as well as the title are taken from the JG Ballard novel of the same name in which a fully automated, modern apartment structure is revealed to be a major antagonist slowly opening up room for the tenants to expose petty grievances that eventually bloom into full blown violent conflicts, exposing larger class frictions.
As I turn the gallery into one of the apartments in one of the towers, the gallery operates metaphorically to open up space not for conflict but for dialogue. I am interested in the role architecture plays in our lives and about the narratives we craft to navigate this complex system which effects both our personal and cultural psyches. A chance for experimentation with my installation process. Before this installation I used to create very detailed working drawings in order to build out each installation. For High Rise I wanted to approach the installation the way I have been approaching my paintings and drawings, by working from memory and responding to a history of marks in real time, altering and growing the composition organically, optically.
